BMW Engine Oil Leaks.

BMW N.A.  Announced in Late October several recalls affecting approximately 170k vehicles.  If you received this notice, call your local BMW center to have the recall performed.  When they perform the recall they will most likely look over your vehicle in the hopes to sell you some maintenance or repairs, while it may be tempting to just "let them do it" hold off.  Best advice I can provide is to get a 2nd opinion on their recommendations.  With the Takata airbag recalls we got inundated with phone calls requesting estimates for this that and the other.  In a large number of those cases we would invite those customer to just bring the car in and let us take a look at it.

Every car is going to leak oil from some gasket at some point in time, the question is how bad is the leak?  Is it just seeping or wet around the gasket? Is it actively wet and starting to stream down the side? Is it pouring out?
There are three reasons why a leak needs to be addressed.

  1. You can smell smoke and it bothers you
  2. You are seeing a lot of oil spots on the ground and you don't want to mess up your driveway
  3. It is leaking on something that will cause more damage

BMW's threshold for excessive oil consumption is 1 quart per 750-1500 miles depending on the vehicle.  So if you are going through that much oil, you should probably get it looked at.

Here is an Oil Filter Housing Gasket that is wet, if you see where it it wet, this is most likely caused from a faulty oil filter CAP "O" Ring.  In this case we would simply recommend to replace the inexpensive "O" Ring that should have been replace on the prior oil and filter change and clean the area off.

If you look at the picture below, you will see the oil filter housing gasket is leaking towards the bottom, but the leak is not severe, this is something that should be monitored and addressed if it gets worse.

This next one is leaking pretty badly, in this case we would recommend replacement as we wouldn't want the oil that is leaking out of it to leak onto the belt or tensioner.
